Kaihua county, the headstream of the Qiantang River, is located in the junction of zhejiang,anhui, and jiangxi three provinces and seven counties. Meanwhile it is also surrounded by Yellow Mountain, Qiandao Lake, and Sanqing Mountain. With such geographical location, Kaihua is characterized with high mountains and flourishing trees, which makes Kaihua be covered by cloud and fog almost all year around. In China, Kaihua is known by not only the Qiantang River Headstream Park but also the Gutian Mountain Natural Reserves. Moreover, Kaihua is entitled as the China Roots-Carve Art Town, the China Longding Famous Tea Town, and China Golden Mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) Town. The flouring virgin forest teems with various ancient species, and the wild Gold Tea is one of the examples. It is well known that the tea is of purely natural health care green tea characteristic.

With the scientific name of the Willowleaf calyx canthus, the Gold Tea is also once called as the Fragrant Tea and the Mountain Calyx Canthus, and it belongs to the Calycanthaceae and the half ever-green shrub. According to the China Wood Sylva, this plant is only grown in the high mountains with an elevation of 3000 meters in Kaihua of Zhejiang.

In addition, it is reported that the name of the Gold Tea is given from a story. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the Huang Chao Uprising arrived in the western of Zhejiang, and some soldiers got sunstroken and diarrhea because of high temperature and long fighting. Finally these soldiers were recovered after drinking a local tea presented by the local farmers with the exchange of gold. From then on, the tea is called the Gold Tea.
